Its almost like they want to get CS2 into the hands of users who never bought it, which is a smart strategy since it would get people learning on Adobe software and would make them more likely to buy a newer version once they've put time into learning it. I'm surprised they provided the download links though, since legitimate CS2 users should have their own installation media. This gives the impression that they have no problem with people obtaining this for free who never bought CS2, but licensed portions of their software like you mention, probably prevent Adobe from officially making it freeware. While this might be interpreted as Adobe giving away software for free, we did it to help our customers. But to ensure that any customers activating those old versions can continue to use their software, we issued a serial number directly to those customers. These products were released over 7 years ago and do not run on many modern operating systems. I agree, good on you Adobe! Too bad Microsoft won't follow the lead and give out Office 2003 for freeĮffective December 13, Adobe disabled the activation server for CS2 products and Acrobat 7 because of a technical glitch. In a way they have to do something though, if they're going to shut down the activation servers. The licence holders from other companies probably wouldn't mind something like this (since they've already got the money for that series of product), and customers should be happy. ![]() I see, well in my opinion thats a pretty good stragedy. So how do you artificially inflate your market share and get those people training for a job using such expensive software? Adobe can only charge a high premium for their software while they're the undisputed market leader in terms of market share, since people are only going to pay those prices while they have to, and they're only going to have to while the vast majority of professionals are trained exclusively in Photoshop. What better way to see off the threat of people learning their skills on say, GIMP, than by "accidentally" releasing your old software for free so that your cheaper rivals can't even compete on price?Īdobe play a clever game by charging high prices, and encouraging black market uptake like this. Adobe CS2 is still a very potent piece of software that is much more capable than the FOSS alternatives. It wouldn't surprise me if this is an "accident", with the quotes. Adobe have a long track record of making it easier for pirates though. ![]() Well, they can't legally make it freeware, because they license parts from other companies - particularly thinking of the codecs in Premiere. This might just be a "silent abandonment" of the well retired second Creative Suite, or perhaps something done for the sake of advertising. Historically, Photoshop was bundled with additional software such as Adobe ImageReady, Adobe Fireworks, Adobe Bridge, Adobe Device Central and Adobe Camera RAW.Silvohex wrote:It's very interesting that an Adobe employee says that this offer is limited to people who already own CS2, yet the website is available to everyone. In June 2013, with the introduction of Creative Cloud branding, Photoshop's licensing scheme was changed to that of software as a service rental model and the "CS" suffixes were replaced with "CC". Photoshop CS3 through CS6 were also distributed in two different editions: Standard and Extended. However, in October 2002, following the introduction of Creative Suite branding, each new version of Photoshop was designated with "CS" plus a number e.g., the eighth major version of Photoshop was Photoshop CS and the ninth major version was Photoshop CS2. Photoshop's naming scheme was initially based on version numbers. ![]() Photoshop's feature set can be expanded by Photoshop plug-ins, programs developed and distributed independently of Photoshop that can run inside it and offer new or enhanced features. In addition to raster graphics, it has limited abilities to edit or render text, vector graphics (especially through clipping path), 3D graphics and video. Photoshop has vast support for graphic file formats but also uses its own PSD and PSB file formats which support all the aforementioned features. It can edit and compose raster images in multiple layers and supports masks, alpha compositing and several color models including RGB, CMYK, CIELAB, spot color and duotone. Since then, it has become the de facto industry standard in raster graphics editing, such that the word "photoshop" has become a verb as in "to Photoshop an image," "photoshopping" and "photoshop contest", though Adobe discourages such use. Photoshop was created in 1988 by Thomas and John Knoll. Adobe Photoshop is a raster graphics editor developed and published by Adobe Systems for macOS and Windows.
